Message from the Awards Chair
Hello WAB Members,
Our nomination period for the WAB Awards of Distinction is now open. On behalf of the Western Association of Broadcasters board of directors, I would like to take this opportunity to update our membership on some changes to our categories and criteria. Please take this opportunity to share with your teams.
Gold Medal Awards for Community Service
Over the years, the WAB has received excellent nominations for the Gold Medal Award for Community Service; it has been wonderful to see so many well-deserving and long-established local charitable endeavours that have an incredible impact in your communities and stations!
Your WAB board would like to see new, innovative or unique community initiatives that your stations undertook this past year. In judging the entries, we will place special focus and emphasis on entries that reflect new ways in how your stations impacted your local communities. Our stations take on a host of initiatives that may be smaller in scale but still have a tremendous effect in your local communities even if it didn’t ring up the biggest tote board or impact multitudes of people in your local area. What did your station do that was unique, innovative or memorable in your community? Broadcasters do fantastic work in our local communities on a daily basis; this is your opportunity to showcase how you DO make a difference, every day! No initiative is too small!
NEW Category for Gold Medal Awards
We’re excited to announce a brand new awards category! In addition to the current Gold Medal categories for Radio and Television, we have added a new third category for Digital. Digital award entries may still include a radio and/or TV component, but we’re looking to award a recipient in the Digital category with a predominantly online focus (eg: website, portal, social media). In this inaugural year, we encourage you to review your digital initiatives for entries in this new category that highlights online service to your local communities.
The two sub-categories for the Radio award for market size 150,000 & over and under 150,000 will continue. For Television and Digital there is one general category, regardless of market size.
Leader of Tomorrow and Hall of Fame
Please note that our board carefully reviews these nominations. While your nominations may be prepared by a variety of people, it's important to ensure the answers match the criteria points. They should be clear, concise and showcase the best examples on how the Hall of Fame and/or the Leader of Tomorrow candidates meet the eligibility requirements to be celebrated as the WAB Leader of Tomorrow and inducted into the WAB Hall of Fame. If your nomination is seen to be incomplete, your board will be unable to include it in the final judging process.
The Hall of Fame criteria have also been updated and may be especially useful if you are intending to re-submit a previous nomination. These changes can be reviewed here.We look forward to seeing your award nominations and to seeing you all in Banff in June 2018!
